I recently finished reading "The Bone House" by Stephen R. Lawhead; I enjoyed it, but was a little lost on how he had gotten to the point where this book started. I thought I had missed a short story or something, but it turns out that this is the 2nd book in a series. Even without reading the first book, "The Bone House" is a fantasic read. I prefer fantasy to science fiction normally, but this book was solid in its settings and did not jump from time period to time period without letting the reader know through clever cues placed beforehand.
Characters were likeable and developed throughout the book, rather than remaining stagnent, one demensional cookie cutter heroes and villians. The settings were fantastical yet realistic, and beautifully described. The history is well reasearched and allows the reader to feel more for what is going on to and with the main characters.
All in all, I highly reccommend this book. It is fun, intelligently written and absorbing.
Just read the first in the series, "The Skin Map" beforehand.
